Dr. Brenda Lovelady Spahn, LHD, founder of The Lovelady Center, the largest faith-based recovery facility for women and children in the nation, transitioned to be with the Lord on December 18, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Known as "Miss Brenda," she launched The Lovelady Center in 2004, starting with seven inmates from Alabama’s Julia Tutwiler Prison in her own home, aiming to teach a life free from drugs and crime. She wrote two books, “Miss Brenda and the Loveladies” and “Miss Brenda and the Lovelady Movement,” detailing her life’s work that has to date impacted over 19,600 Loveladies and their children.
Miss Brenda, a visionary who redefined support systems for women leaving prison, developed a "Whole-way House" model, a term which she coined while integrating comprehensive programming and services that empower women to reintegrate into society successfully. An ordained minister, she led the Center until 2021, when she passed the torch to her daughter, Melinda MeGahee, its current Executive Director.
She was bestowed an honorary doctorate from Tennessee Temple University and numerous awards, including NBC13’s “Making a Difference” award, CBS 42’s Women Breaking Barriers, and most recently, Miss Brenda has been named as one of the “This Is Alabama’s Women Who Shape the State 2025 Honorees.” She leaves a lasting legacy recognized on national platforms like LIFE Today, the 700 Club, and DirecTV’s Hometown Heroes. Her life story is also celebrated in the book “Portraits of Hope: The Loveladies,” by Beverly McNeil.
Born on January 27, 1949, Brenda leaves behind her husband Jeff Spahn, her children Beau Gregory (Melissa), Matthew Gregory (Rebekah), Melinda MeGahee (Shawn), Miranda Oestenstadt, Hunter Spahn (Natasha), and 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, continuing her legacy of transformative compassion.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to The Lovelady Center in her honor on the secure Lovelady Center website, or by sending a check made payable to The Lovelady Center in honor of Miss Brenda to 7916 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35206.
